What is Ketamine treatment and how does it work?

Ketamine has recently been described as the most important breakthrough in the last fifty years for the treatment of depression, anxiety and chronic pain. It has been used safely and effectively in hospitals worldwide since the 1960’s as an FDA approved anesthetic drug. Numerous articles in medical journals in the last few years have shown efficacy in using ketamine in sub-anesthetic doses to treat depression and some chronic pain syndromes.

Ketamine has been shown to be effective in treating symptoms of depression.

Ketamine treatments are reported to have antidepressant effects identifiable at 4 hours post-Ketamine infusion and that persisted at a 72-hour assessment with the response and remission rates with one day post treatment at 71% and 29% respectively utilizing infusions.

Depending on patient and severity of condition the antidepressant benefits were apparent at 40 minutes and can peak at day 1 with the need to pursue treatment continuously. Ketamine improves the cell signaling in the brain and helps reverse brain atrophy (shrinking) that is seen in depression patients.

Many find relief of symptoms after just one infusion with lasting effects for weeks to months after completing the initial series. Boosters can be required after the initial series depending on your results and for continued control of symptoms.

There are several steps we will go over to help you determine if boosters are needed for your case. Ketamine just like any drug is not a cure, but rather a treatment meant to aid in reducing symptoms.

While Ketamine infusion therapy is a safe, effective treatment for depression, not everyone that suffers from mood disorders is a candidate for ketamine treatments.

Our goal is to assist patients who feel at the end of their rope with depression as well as those who have been newly diagnosed with depression. These are people who are under the care of a mental health professional and have tried other approaches to treating their depression as well as those who are seeking a faster approach to relief while their prescribed traditional antidepressant begins to work (which can take 2-6 weeks).

These individuals sometimes have what is called treatment-resistant depression. Ketamine infusions are not for those with mild depression, situational depression, or mood swings. Ketamine treatment has shown impressive results in treating medication-resistant clinical depression.

Here are some of the most common scenarios where we at Reaching4Wellness prescribe IV Ketamine therapy to treat depression:

  • If you need relief faster than the weeks or months of depression medication trials.
  • If you’ve had depression for a substantial length of time and other medications have not been effective.
  • If you are suicidal or otherwise incapable of functioning and need prompt relief.
  • If you are experiencing severe, unremitting depression such as Major Depressive Disorder.
  • If you are experiencing postpartum depression.
  • If you are experiencing an episode of bipolar depression.
  • If your current depression medication has ceased helping you.

The benefits of Ketamine therapy are reportedly long-lasting for the majority of clients who have used it. Many clients find their oral depression medication works better after ketamine therapy and don’t feel the need for further ketamine infusions.

In other cases, clients choose periodic ketamine treatment after their initial series. If you have depression but don’t treat it with medication, there is a greater likelihood you will desire further treatment down the road. Reaching4Wellness can help you.

Ketamine infusion therapy works both as a stand-alone treatment and in conjunction with oral depression medication.

If you’re already taking oral medication, we typically have you continue your oral medication during your Ketamine infusion series though individual cases may vary.

In cases where a previously effective depression medication has ceased working, Ketamine can even act as a reset, enabling your medication to work again after your Ketamine series.

If you haven’t yet started oral medication, Ketamine therapy can provide immediate relief to help you while you perform your trials of oral depression medication.

Although the majority of IV Ketamine treatments are for depression, Ketamine has also demonstrated highly effective results with severe anxiety.

Ketamine can also be very effective when both severe anxiety and depression are present together. During your in-person evaluation, we can determine whether you’re a good candidate for Ketamine.

In addition to treating depression and anxiety, IV Ketamine therapy is also prescribed for:

  • PTSD
  • OCD
  • Fibromyalgia and other chronic pain syndromes
